Chaga (Inonotus Obliquus) is a fungus that predominantly grows on all species of birch trees. It resembles large irregular lumps of burnt charcoal on the outside as seen in the picture here. The inside is a softer dense cork like, rusty colored mass. Wild Chaga grows very slowly and can live on its host tree for 40-60 years. Chaga usually appears on birch trees that have been damaged by wood harvesters, lightening strikes, fire etc.. Chaga shares a symbiotic relationship with the tree, healing the birch while taking nutrients from the tree to grow. It only grows in colder climates in the northern hemisphere. Russia, Eastern European countries, Finland and Northern Canada are some of the geographic locations and includes The State of Maine, where Chaga can be found and has been used for centuries for a wide range of medicinal treatments. The indigenous tribes here in Maine have known of Chagas super nutrient properties for some time.
In Siberia, over harvesting in some areas led to studies trying to cultivate it, however results have shown that key nutrients are diminished greatly or totally absent from cultivated Chaga, only wild harvested Chaga contains all of the desired nutrients. DeMar All Natural is working to protect Maine’s wild Chaga and adheres to sustainable harvesting practices (a one-inch ring, completely surrounding the base attached to the tree, needs to be left on the tree while leaving the wood of the tree untouched). We only deal with other suppliers and harvesters who do the same. This allows the mushroom to rejuvenate to be harvested again in future years.
Chaga has been hailed as “The King of the Medicinal Mushrooms”. There are many well documented studies indicating that this superfood or super nutrient rich mushroom possesses tremendous health benefits covering a wide spectrum of health related conditions. We have provided a couple of excellent sites of actual scientific studies, that provide valuable information for you to research at the bottom of this page. There is also an excellent video on YouTube titled, “What is Chaga? Learn Why It's a Top Superfood Mushroom,” produced by www.superfoods-for-superhealth.com. It is a must see if you are serious about incorporating this potent powerhouse into your everyday life. Superfoods for Superhealth's’ website promotes a couple of companies that sell Siberian Chaga products, but rest assured that our products are equal to and in some instances may exceed our Siberian competition. The valuable information on Chaga provided in their video is excellent, regardless of Chaga mushroom’s geographical location. Some of the purported benefits are discussed briefly here, as it is estimated that there are approximately 215 vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential nutrients contained in a single chunk of Chaga.
In recent years emphasis in scientific studies has been placed on the extremely high levels of potent antioxidants in Chaga which, reportedly, have powerful effects on cancer cells and tumors. There are published studies documenting this as early as the 1970s, where extracts of Chaga were used as a cancer drug in Russia, with reports written on the successful treatment of cervical, stomach, lung and breast cancers (Hobbs 1995). It has been stated also that Chaga, through its antioxidant properties, super charges our immune system and causes a gene protective effect on our bodies, while nourishing, hydrating and healing our skin. Claims have been made that the unique complex properties of Chaga reduces chronic inflammation, therefore reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as treating gastrointestinal disorders, irritable bowel syndrome and degenerative diseases. Chaga has also been classified as an adaptogen and as an adaptogen could enable Chaga to influence sugar and cholesterol levels in a very positive way. In one lab analysis, it was reported that Chaga was found to contain one of the highest known levels of melanin on the planet, therefore theorizing that Chaga would provide protection to the skin from harmful UV rays and in doing so, aid in the prevention of skin cancer. The accolades in the last 20-25 years are many and so much more is written on Chaga, especially in the last 10-15 years, with the information readily available in our wireless cyber world. It is strongly advised that you research and educate yourself before deciding to incorporate Chaga into your daily lifestyle for health related issues and although many countries classify Chaga as a medicinal mushroom the United States classifies it as a nutrient rich food. Medicinal uses of Chaga have not been evaluated by FDA, which is the leading authority in the United States.
Rarely, however, what is hardly discussed (attention mainly focused on the many purported health benefits) is the taste of Chaga tea or liquid extract mixed in your drink of choice. It is absolutely delicious with a mild, smooth, vanilla like flavor and has a rich brown coffee like appearance with no bitterness in taste when brewed properly as a tea. Unlike other retailers who specify steeping their tea bags of ground Chaga in hot water for 5-10 minutes, which produces a very weak, less than beneficial tea, we recommend that you simmer it for at least 15-20 minutes to achieve the full strength. The longer the better! A single preparation of loose tea can be used 3 or more times and still result in a good quality tea. We recommend using it at least twice before putting the spent Chaga in your composter. DeMar All Natural has developed Instant Chaga Tea Bags, enabling our customers to enjoy a fully brewed cup of tea quickly by steeping in hot water the same as traditional leaf tea, tea bags! This is particularly convenient for individuals that are on the go or want a quick cup of Instant Chaga Tea in the workplace. An informational insert with complete brewing instructions, a suggested usage chart for Chaga Dual Extract and creative suggested uses for our Chaga Powdered Extract, is provided with every Chaga product we sell.
